Description

Teaching quilting is similar to creating a quilt or any art – you use your skills and talent to combine materials and techniques into a balanced and cohesive whole. This on-demand web seminar will give you the tools and insight you need to engage participants and create a classroom experience as successful as the quilt projects you create. You’ll hear things you may know and discover things you never thought of!

The goal of this web seminar is to help you combine your art skills, knowledge, personality, and style into classes that your students will love, recommend, and want more of. Successful teaching is not just about sharing the how-to. The art of teaching includes a myriad of behind-the-scenes actions, that, if done well, a student is never even aware of – they just know they are happy and learning what they came to learn.

Lesley has been teaching quilting and fiber art classes for over 17 years, from Artfest to Australia, local shops to international events and now online. She will share her personal stories (such as arriving to set up an hour before class only to find her classroom had no tables or chairs) and her insight and wisdom from years of ‘in the trenches’ experience.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN IN THIS WEB SEMINAR:

  • The one most important (but often overlooked) skill you need  to be a successful quilting teacher
  • Your two most necessary outside-the-classroom actions
  • The Eight Ps (plus a couple of Cs) of teaching quilting
  • How to get started if you’ve never taught
  • Important lessons Lesley learned the hard way
  • pros & cons checklist to help you make the decision to teach

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Lesley Riley wears many hats. She is an internationally known artist, quilter, teacher, writer and Artist Success coach and mentor who has turned her initial passion for photos, color and the written word into a dream occupassion. Her art and articles have appeared in numerous publications and juried shows. As former Contributing Editor of Cloth Paper Scissors, Lesley showcased new talent in mixed-media art. She has also contributed to Quilting Arts Magazine. Her first book, Quilted Memories, brought new ideas and techniques to quilting and preserving memories. The second, Fabric Memory Books, combined fabric and innovative ideas with the art of bookmaking. Two more books, Fabulous Fabric Art with Lutradur and Create with Transfer Artist Paper, introduced versatile new materials to the mixed media art world. Her fifth book will debut late summer 2014. She filmed two videos for Quilting Arts and made three appearances in Season 1 of Quilting Arts TV.

In an ongoing effort to find the best ways for quilters and mixed media artists to get permanent transfers on fabric and other surfaces, Lesley introduced TAP Transfer Artist Paper™, named CHA’s 2011 Most Innovative new product. It is the state of the art technology for iron-on transfers to fabric, paper, wood, metal and more.

Lesley is the former host of BlogTalk Radio’s Art & Soul show, with over 75 in-depth interviews with well-known artists on art and the creative process. Her passion and desire to help every artist reach their creative dreams and potential has led her to a growing specialty as an Artist Success™ expert and coach, providing guidance for artists of all levels.
