Welcome to the Peace Cottage Quilt Along! | McCall’s Quilting Blog

Quilters love Lynn Lister’s quilt designs. Their charm and delightful stories plus fun piecing make them favorites with quilters of all ages and skill levels. So when we first saw Lynn’s Peace Cottage quilt, we knew our quilting community would be thrilled to make it.

Since that time, we’ve seen many, many photos of reader versions of the Peace Cottage quilt pattern. Guilds have done it as a raffle quilt, entire quilting bees have each made their own quilts, and the letters we get with the photos often mention the meanings the images in the quilt have for the quilters making the design.

Some quilters, like Marie Moore of British Columbia, Canada, have even made more than one Peace Cottage quilt. Marie wrote us, “Thank you for featuring this beautiful quilt design! When I first saw Peace Cottage, I knew I had to make it. I live in northern Canada where we have distinct seasons so these two quilts depict summer and winter for me. And I am seriously thinking autumn and spring versions would be equally as beautiful!”

And now we’re ready to take Peace Cottage to the next level – a Quilt Along! Here’s the most recent version of Peace Cottage, this one make by our content director Carolyn Beam:

Peace Cottage finishes at 66 1/2″ x 81″.

Take a minute to study the quilt. Notice the variety of stars? Two types of pieced star blocks plus just a few appliqued stars combine to give the sky area of the quilt loads of sparkle. There’s even a strip of flying geese soaring above the homestead…so cute!

And then there are the trees – tall ones, medium ones, tiny ones, giving the quilt a sense of depth and perspective. The fence row defines the areas of the quilt and gives the eye a place to rest. Log Cabin blocks at the bottom of the quilt center bring to mind cultivated fields and crops ready for harvest.

But the centerpiece of this creative design is the cottage itself, a fun quilt block (shown here with the adjoining silo) that goes together like a puzzle. A trio of plain borders and a final piano key border frame the center of the quilt and bring the colors and textures of the scrappy assortment of fabrics all the way to the edges. So happy and homey!
