Take the Quiz:
How is Modern Quilting Different than Traditional Quilting?

So, is modern quilting really that different from what we’ve been doing for generations? The answer is both yes, and no. Modern quilters still piece, still quilt—still may have UFQ’s (unfinished quilts)! But instead of following traditional block patterns to the letter, modern quilting often plays with improvisation, scale, and layout in a whole new way. (That said, when it comes to a “modern quilt,” you might be surprised to learn that in many ways, it IS your grandmother’s quilt!) You can learn more about the taxonomy of Modern Quilting here.

You’ll see a lot of bold solids, high-contrast color combos, and even some minimalist vibes—like quilting inspired by architecture, typography, or modern art. Straight-line quilting is huge in the modern world, giving quilts a clean, almost sculptural feel. Unlike the very early days of quilting where everything happened around the frame in someone’s living room, modern quilting really blossomed online—think blogs, Instagram, virtual bees, and big quilt shows like QuiltCon. QuiltCon has become a well-attended event; check out the official QuiltCon magazine!
Does Modern Quilting Replace Traditional Quilting?

Here’s the best part: modern quilting isn’t about replacing traditional quilting—it’s about expanding what quilting can be. Many quilters blend styles, mix old and new, or modernize their favorite traditional blocks.
Our staff recently challenged each other to reimagine a traditional block to give it a fresh, modern twist—and you can do the same! Start by choosing a block pattern from our free quilt block library. Try using bold solids or play with a layout that breaks out of the grid. There’s no need to abandon what you love; modern quilting is more like adding a new tool (or toy!) to your quilting toolbox. Who knows? You might find that a little asymmetrical, improvisational piecing, negative space, or a bold pop of color is just the spark you didn’t know you were looking for. Whether you lean toward hand-stitched heritage or graphic minimalism (or both!), there’s room for you in the modern quilting world. Give it a go—your creativity will thank you!
